Exhibition “Coins in the Ancient Greek World”
The exhibition “Coins in the Ancient Greek World” presents the history of coinage from the time of its invention in the late 7th century BCE until the end of the Hellenistic period. It also showcases the ancient coins of the Ionian islands. The exhibition includes 97 coins from the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection and a wealth of explanatory material.
The beginning
The history of coinage goes back to the pre-coin period. The exhibition initially displays the precursors of coins. It then presents coins and bimetallism.
The development
The development of coinage follows the 3 great periods of antiquity: Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic. The exhibition presents the special features of each period and showcases the most prominent coins of each period.
Tributes
There are distinct sections dedicated to:
- The 2 most powerful coins in antiquity: Athenian owls and Alexander’s tetradrachms.
- The ancient coins of the Ionian islands: Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos.
The exhibits
The exhibition showcases 97 coins from the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection. Maps, schematic representations, explanatory texts and enlarged images help better understand the history of the coin and add an educational aspect to the exhibition.

Educational programme
The same-titled educational programme for children aged 5-12 is carried out in the context of the exhibition.

The exhibition is accompanied by the scientific catalogue Coins in the Ancient Greek World, edited by Dr Dimitra Tsangari. The publication has a wealth of explanatory and photographic material and is available in Greek and English.
