Exhibition “Theophilos the Painter”

A painting by Theophilos and a 3D figure of a hero from the Greek Revolution of 1821.

The educational exhibition “Theophilos the Painter – His Works Shape their Environment” introduces pre-school and school children to the life and works of Theophilos. The exhibition includes 3D representations of the artist’s paintings. The pieces are complemented by additional material from the collections of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation.

The children learn about Theophilos

The Alpha Bank Art Collection presents the educational exhibition “Theophilos the Painter – His Works Shape their Environment”, which opened in 2017.

The exhibition serves an educational purpose during the winter months. Its aim is to introduce primary and high-school students, as well as pre-school children, to Theophilos’ life, works and era.

Over the summer, the exhibition is open during museum operating hours, with certain modifications in its presentation.

Digitisation of 7 paintings by the artist

The contents of the exhibition are centred around 7 of the 24 paintings by Theophilos that belong to the Alpha Bank Art Collection. These paintings have been transformed into digital 3D pieces.

In addition, relevant objects from the collections of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation complement each piece. This serves to presenting a broader picture of Theophilos’ era.

3 additional paintings

Aside from the digital pieces, 3 more paintings by the artist are featured in the exhibition: the Serbian Gypsy Witches (1933), the Hunter, and Odysseus and his Followers. The latter was originally a wall painting which was removed and is accompanied by explanatory texts regarding the technique of wall-painting detachment.

A long night at the museum

The Alpha Bank Cultural Centre in Nafplio participates in the European Night of Museums every May, throughout the duration of the exhibition.

The European Night of Museums is a global event by ICOM (International Council of Museums). One specific night every May, most museums in the world remain open until midnight.

Film screening

The film Theophilos Chatzimichail (1979), from the ERT TV series Monogramma, produced and directed by Giorgos and Iro Sgouraki, is screened on the sidelines of the exhibition.

Accompanying publications

The exhibition is accompanied by 3 brochures for students in kindergarten, primary school and high school. They were designed by a museum educator to include activities and games based on the exhibition.
