Greek Art from 1950 until Today

The exhibition “The Alpha Bank Collection. Greek Art from 1950 until Today” held on the island of Rhodes launches a new series of travelling exhibitions, following the last exhibition organised in 2008 in Cyprus.

The exhibition sheds a more contemporary look on modern Greek art. It focuses on pieces created from 1950 onwards.

It is structured around categories of works and artists who stand out. The aim of the exhibition is to compose the history of modern Greek art through these specific pieces.

The exhibits

The exhibition features 60 paintings, sculptures, assemblages, sketches and prints. These exhibits clearly make up the evolution of contemporary Greek art in a period of constant change.

The starting point is the art of the post-war era, which was influenced by the great financial and social turmoil of the period.

Notable creators of modern Greek art

The exhibition includes works by remarkable modern Greek artists. It is structured around the categories of the works of art presented.

• Painting: The exhibition starts with the presentation of Vlassis Caniaris, one of the most notable representatives of the international avant-garde in Greece. The turn towards modern art becomes more apparent with Yannis Gaitis, Nikos Kessanlis, Dimitris Perdikidis, Yannis Psychopedis, and Vasilis Sperantzas.
• Assemblages: The exhibition focuses on artists who experimented with new materials and media, such as Yannis Bouteas, Jason Molfesis, Alekos Levidis, etc.
• Printmaking: The evolution of printmaking, as shaped by the students of Jean Kefalinos’ workshop, A. Tassos and Vaso Katraki, is presented. The exhibition concludes with printmakers who worked beyond the narrow limits of the classical techniques.

Exhibition catalogue  

A catalogue titled The Alpha Bank Collection. Greek Art from 1950 until Today accompanies the exhibition. The publication is available in Greek and English, and includes rich photographic material. It was edited by Irene Orati.
