Greek Art from 1960 until Today

The exhibition “The Alpha Bank Collection. Greek Art from 1960 until Today” held in Thessaloniki focuses on pieces created from 1960 onwards. The works were selected with a view to showcase the more modern and contemporary character of the Alpha Bank Art Collection.

The goals of the exhibition are to:

• Present the Alpha Bank Art Collection, which has been enriched with significant exhibits in the last decade.
• Display works by artists who experiment with new forms, transferring the influences of the European movements to modern Greek art.

The exhibition complements the previous exhibition titled “The Alpha Bank Collection. Greek Art from 1920 until Today”, hosted at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in 2006.

The exhibits

The exhibition boasts 41 works by Greek artists: paintings, sculptures, assemblages, sketches and prints that form the evolution of modern Greek art in the second half of the 20th century.

The exhibits start from the 1960s and move into the first decade of the 21st century.

• The 1960s: Important avant-garde pieces by artists such as Pavlos, Kessanlis, Thodoros, Romanos, Samaras, Gaitis. Those artists lived in metropolitan cities abroad and created their own universe, which defined their course.
• The 1970s and 1980s: Inventive pieces, defying all convention both in the use of materials and the multitude of the symbolisms being expressed. Among others, Skylakos, Karas, Stamos, Lazongas and Perdikidis are presented.
• The 1990s: The third dimension, a variety of techniques, the use of electricity, the comeback of natural materials and all kinds of experimentation produced extraordinary assemblages. They highlighted ideas, redefined uses and created new environments. The exhibition includes works by Golanta, Papaspyrou and Tsoklis.
• The 2000s: These are pieces that mostly process personal experiences. Works by Chadoulis, Mantzavinos and Giannakaki are presented.

Exhibition catalogue

A catalogue titled The Alpha Bank Collection. Greek Art from 1960 until Today accompanies the exhibition. The publication is available in Greek and English, and includes rich photographic material. It was edited by Maria Tsantsanoglou, Irene Orati and Yiannis Bolis.
