Participation in the exhibition “Pyrrhus King and Leader”

The loans of Alpha Bank’s Numismatic Collection to the exhibition “Pyrrhus King and Leader. Epirus in the Mediterranean and the World”:

1. Silver tetradrachm of Pyrrhus, Epirus, 295-272 BCE. The obverse depicts the head of Dodonian Zeus. The reverse depicts Dodonian Zeus and his consort, Dione.
2. Silver stater of Pyrrhus, 279-274 BCE. The obverse depicts a head of Achilles with the facial features of Pyrrhus. On the reverse, Achilles’ mother Thetis carries her son’s weapons on a sea horse.

Exhibits from other museums

The exhibition presented the life of King Pyrrhus of Epirus, a quite exceptional historical figure. It brought together exhibits from the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, the Archaeological Museums of Thessaloniki, Florina, Argos Orestikon and Arta, along with items from archaeological museums in Italy, including the Archaeological Museum of Naples, the National Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome, and the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria.

A bilingual catalogue of the same title in Greek and English was published to accompany the exhibition.
