“Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki: 60 years”: Scientific conference
The Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari, participated with an announcement in the scientific conference hosted by the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki for its 60-year anniversary. The conference was held from 30.11.2023 to 02.12.2023 in the Manolis Andronikos Hall of the Museum, on the sidelines of the exhibition “Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki: 60 years | 60 moments”.

Aim of the conference
The conference honoured the 60-year anniversary of the largest and oldest archaeological museum in Northern Greece. In addition, it presented a review of the multifaceted work of the Museum and highlighted the milestones of its history as well as the actions of people who served it.
The aim was to trigger a creative discussion on:
- The evolution and development of museums.
- Their role in the constantly changing modern societies on a national and an international level.
The announcement of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection Curator
Dr Dimitra Tsangari, the Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, participated in the conference with the announcement “Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection and Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki: Memories and Truths” on 30.11.2023.
The announcement was part of the “The lived memory: stories and people” section. It included a review of the long and successful partnership between the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection.
Dr Tsangari referred to the 2 major partnerships between the Collection and the Museum:
- Exhibition “Coins of Macedonia in the Alpha Bank Collection, in 2009
- Exhibition “The Europe of Greece. Colonies and Coins from the Alpha Bank Collection, in 2014
Dr Tsangari highlighted the fact that the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki was the first public museum to welcome the private numismatic collection of Alpha Bank in 2009. This worked as a referral for our future partnerships with other public museums.
The partnership with the Museum has been a multifaceted one. Apart from the exhibition planning, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and Alpha Bank have jointly run:
- Educational programmes
- Lectures
- Guided tours
- A Scientific meeting on the Greek colonisation
In addition, the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection loaned coins to other exhibitions and conferences held by the Museum, in 2018 and in 2019.
Dr Tsangari underlined the leading role the Museum and its people have played in the 50 years of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection history . The outward-looking approach of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is a major parameter for its sustainability and contributes to the progress of society.
