Aim of the exhibition

The contribution of women to modern Greek Art

The aim of the exhibition is to showcase women’s contribution to every aspect of artistic creation, despite the obstacles and discrimination they faced over time.

At the same time, in an era when the issue of female empowerment dominates public discourse, the exhibition seeks to acknowledge the multifaceted and often conflicting roles that women are called upon to take on today.

Opening ceremony

The Alpha Bank CEO, Mr Vassilios Psaltis, attended the opening ceremony for the exhibition on 07.10.2024. Find out more about the Alpha Bank CEO’s visit to the opening ceremony.

The ceremony was also attended by representatives from local institutions on Corfu, as well as people of the arts and letters, senior Alpha Bank executives and the general public.

The sections of the exhibition

Aiming to set women’s accomplishment in the field of art in the broader context of the educational, social and political achievements of each era, the exhibition is structured in 5 sections:

  1. Women in the world of art – The first steps (late 19th – early 20th century)
The audience discovers women’s first attempts to engage with art on a professional level in the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.
  2. Painting – From representation to abstraction
The section features works by female artists that in the 2nd half of the 20th century established themselves in the art world and turned towards the abstract movement.
  3. Printmaking – Traditional techniques and experimentation with new media
The section presents exclusively printmaking works that highlight the female perspective and contribution to developing new techniques.
  4. Sculpture
Works that are indicative of women's contribution to the art of sculpture are showcased.
  5. Contemporary art – Revamping the visual arts landscape
The section features works that express the explorations and trends of contemporary female artists and how they are influenced by the new digital reality.
