The catalogue of a remarkable exhibition
The publication was released on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition for A. Tassos held at the Benaki Museum – 138 Pireos Street, Athens, from 30 November 2015 to 31 January 2016. The exhibition was organised by Alpha Bank, in partnership with the Benaki Museum and the A. Tassos Society of Visual Arts.
The exhibition was held 28 years after the large retrospective exhibition for the printmaker at the National Gallery in 1987. The aim of the exhibition was to have Tassos’ work re-evaluated by an audience with a sense of art different to that of the era when the pieces were created.
The artist’s life in a nutshell
A. Tassos (Anastasios Alevizos) is considered the main reformer of Greek printmaking and one of the most acclaimed printmakers of the post-war era.
He participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and received many accolades in Greece and abroad.
Works and themes
Tassos worked as a printmaker, focusing more on woodcuts. He has also worked in graphic arts. He has illustrated more than 60 publications (books and albums) and created postage stamps for the Hellenic and the Cypriot Republic for a series of years.
In his themes, one can always identify elements from Greek landscapes, rural people, and urban life, as well as evidence of social sensitivity.
Features of his work
Tassos’ work has distinct ideological features, at times obvious and at times hidden. Tassos expresses himself with low-key realism and, without narrating, uses symbolism, which may be hard to discern at first but soon becomes apparent.
