What the publication includes

The publication Coins in the Ancient Greek World presents the history of coinage from the time of its invention in the late 7th century BCE to the end of the Hellenistic period in the 2nd century BCE. It includes photos of 40 coins from the Alpha Bank Collection and a wealth of explanatory material.

The catalogue of a major exhibition

The publication accompanied the exhibition “Coins in the Ancient Greek World” hosted at the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank on the island of Corfu in 2012.

How is started

The history of coinage goes back to the pre-coin period. The publication initially presents the precursors of coins. It then presents coins and bimetallism. Reference is made to the first coins in Greece, the turtles of Aegina, the owls of Athens and the foals of Corinth.

How it went

The development of coinage follows the 3 great periods of antiquity: Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic. The exhibition presents the special features of each period and showcases the most prominent coins of each period.

Tributes

The 2 most powerful coins during antiquity are presented in a separate chapter: the Athenian owls and Alexander’s tetradrachms.

In the end, there is a representation of how ancient coins were made.
