Contents of the publication
The volume Economy and Society on Both Shores of the Aegean is the product of the joint efforts by the Alpha Bank Historical Archives, the Ottoman Bank Archives and Research Center, an institution that belongs to the Turkish Garanti Bank, and the department of History of the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul.
The effort started in 2004, when a monthly Greek-Turkish seminar started being organised, titled “Economy and Society on Both Shores of the Aegean”. The seminar ran for 3 consecutive academic terms. It was centred around the Greek-Orthodox populations during the late Ottoman Period.
Different facets of the social and economic realities of these populations were studied:
- Intercommunity relationships.
- National and social identities.
- Trade activities.
- Social networks.
- Population exchanges.
- The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
